Glass railings · Brampton
Glass guards for decks, walkouts and stair landings
A glass railing keeps the view open, but it's still a guard: the building code's word for a railing that stops a fall. That shapes the glass, the fittings and sometimes the paperwork. We connect you with an independent local professional who installs glass railings or replaces one broken panel, and who'll flag where the City's rules come in.
- Decks, walkouts, stairs and landings
- Tempered or laminated safety glass
- One broken panel replaced on its own

Styles
Deck, stair and interior railing styles
Four ways to hold the glass. Many add a cap rail in metal or wood.
Posts
Glass clipped between metal posts. The usual deck railing.
Spigots
Clamps grip each panel at the base. No posts, but the fixing below must be solid.
Standoffs
Round fittings hold glass off the side of a stair or deck edge.
Base channel
Glass locked into a continuous channel. Tidy indoors.
The glass
The glass: tempered or laminated, and why
Ontario's Building Code requires glass in guards to be safety glass of the laminated or tempered type (OBC 9.8.8.7). Tempered glass is strong and breaks into small pieces. Laminated glass holds together when it cracks, so the panel stays in the opening.
Thickness comes from the railing system and its engineering, not from a photo. What you choose is the look: clear, low-iron for a less green edge, or frosted for privacy between decks on a semi or townhouse. For glass tops and shelves, see custom glass.
One broken panel
Replacing a single broken railing panel
A cracked panel rarely means a new railing. Most systems let one panel come out.
Keep people off it
Block the area and don't lean on the rail. Cracked tempered glass can hold, then let go.
Photograph it
Wide and close-up, for the pro and any insurance claim.
Note the details
Look for the stamp in a corner of a sound panel and measure the broken one.
New glass is fitted
The panel is made to size, then set in the existing hardware.
Permits
Permits: when a deck or guard project needs one
The City's homeowner permit page has a separate package for porches and decks. Before you commit to a new deck or railing, confirm with the Building Division whether a permit applies and what guard height they expect. Three situations need an extra check:
Churchville
The heritage district plan requires a heritage permit to replace or change porches and verandahs. See our Churchville page.
Condo townhouses
A City permit for work on a condo's common elements needs the corporation's signed Notice of Permission to Construct. Ask the board before ordering glass.
Bolton and Georgetown
Permits come from the Town of Caledon or Halton Hills, not Brampton. We'll check whether a pro covers Bolton or Georgetown addresses.
What affects the quote
What shapes a glass railing quote
Railings are priced by the run and the system:
- Length of the run, corners and stair sections
- Posts, spigots, standoffs or a base channel
- Glass type, thickness and finish
- Cap rail material
- What it fixes into: wood deck, concrete or an indoor floor
- Removing the old railing, and any permit drawings
Ask for a written quote naming the system, glass type and thickness, removal of the old railing and who arranges any permit.
Separate entrances
Walkout stairs and decks added with a separate entrance
Turning a basement into a second unit often means a new side or rear entrance: a walkout, or stairs down to a below-grade door. A separate below-grade entrance needs its own permit under the City's below-grade entrance package, and the guards along those stairs should be part of that plan. Let whoever is running the unit include them; contractors can bring us in for the glass. For the suite's windows, see our basement unit guide.
Winter
Winter care
Winter here swings across freezing on many days, and the glass copes; the fittings need the care. Shovel with a plastic blade, don't pile snow against panels, rinse de-icing salt off posts and spigots in spring, and check the fittings are still tight. Railings on plazas and offices are under commercial glass; everything else is under all services.

Send the run length and a photo of the deck or stair
Measure the length of railing you need and photograph the deck, stair or landing. We'll pass it to a local pro who does glass railings.
