Snelgrove window repair, from everyday fixes to storm damage

Snelgrove sits at the north end of Brampton, around Hurontario Street and Mayfield Road, and it holds a notable place in Canadian weather history. Most days, though, window problems here are ordinary: a fogged unit, a stiff crank, a storm door that no longer closes.

Using this service is free. We're the go-between: your description and photos go to an independent north Brampton glass pro who handles that kind of repair, and the pro quotes and does it.

From 'Edmonton' to Snelgrove

The hamlet was first called Edmonton. The railway renamed it in the 1880s after the Snell family, who had settled here in 1838. Today it's part of north Brampton.

The name is now better known for weather, and the lesson is a practical one about water and wind.

A weather record and what it teaches about windows

During Hurricane Hazel in 1954, Snelgrove recorded more rain than anywhere else in Canada. Storms like that are rare. Heavy rain isn't, and it finds the same weak spots each time: cracked caulking around a frame, a clogged sill drain, a basement window well.

A window well collects whatever falls into it. If its drain is blocked, water pools against the basement window and can get in around the frame. A pro can check the frame, seal and caulking; drainage below the well may be a waterproofing contractor's job.

Seals, caulking and storm doors

Wind drives rain sideways, and the parts that keep it out wear quietly:

  • Caulking: cracked caulking around the outside of a frame is the simplest place to stop a leak. A pro can strip and redo it.
  • Weatherstripping: worn seals on casements and patio doors let in wind long before water.
  • Storm doors: a storm door shields the front door and its glass from wind-driven rain, and a new closer stops it catching in a gust.
  • Sill drains: small weep holes under many vinyl windows let water out; clogged, they leave it sitting in the track.

Storm damage and board-up

The City described the May 2022 derecho as "a severe thunderstorm with extreme winds", with fallen trees and long power outages (City of Brampton). If a storm breaks a window, work through four steps:

  1. Make it safe. Move everyone, pets included, away from the glass; put on shoes and gloves before clearing any.
  2. Photograph it inside and out, before anything is moved, for your insurer.
  3. Cover it. Plastic and tape, or plywood, keeps the weather out for now. A pro can board up a large opening.
  4. Replace it properly once the glass is measured and made.

Emergency glass repair explains what can be done right away and what waits for glass cut to size.

Everyday repairs: fogged glass and hardware

Most window problems have nothing to do with storms. Haze trapped inside a double-glazed window points to a failed seal, and the glass unit can usually be changed without a new frame; see foggy window repair. Cranks strip, locks loosen and patio rollers flatten, and each part can be replaced on its own through window repair. When a frame is cracked or rotted, the pro will say replacement is worth pricing. Describe the damage or draft and send a photo.

Snelgrove questions

How do I get my windows ready for a big storm?

Check the caulking around each frame outside, clear sill drains and window wells, and make sure storm and patio doors latch firmly. Lock windows before high wind, since a locked sash seals tighter.

Can a storm door protect the glass in my front door?

It helps. A storm door takes the first hit from wind-driven rain and debris, sparing the entry door and its glass insert, and stops a gust catching the main door. Storm doors use safety glass, so if their own glass breaks, it breaks more safely.

Who do I call after wind damage to a window?

If anyone is hurt, or a tree is down on wires, call emergency services or the utility first. For the window, make it safe, photograph it, and call your insurer if you plan to claim. Once that's done, send photos with your request so a board-up and glazing pro can see the damage.

Will insurance pay for a window broken in a Snelgrove windstorm?

That's your insurer's call, based on your policy wording and deductible. Photograph the damage before cleanup, keep the broken pieces if it's safe, and ask the pro for a written quote that describes the damage and replacement item by item.

Water keeps pooling in my basement window well after heavy rain. Why?

Most often the drain at the bottom of the well is packed with leaves and soil, or the yard slopes toward the house, so the water has no way out. Clear it, watch whether it drains after the next rain, and consider a well cover. If water gets in around the window itself, see basement windows.
