Shower doors and tub panels for family and suite bathrooms

When a big household shares one bathroom, the shower door works hard. Sometimes the fix is one part; sometimes it's a new door, or glass for a tub that still has a curtain. We're a free referral service: we pass your photos and sizes to an independent local glass professional who does shower work, and they quote and install. Tiled walk-ins are on custom shower enclosures.

  • Worn seals and hinges fixed when that's enough
  • Tub panels and doors for any bathroom
  • Tempered safety glass, explained plainly

What's going wrong

Common problems: leaks, sagging doors, cloudy glass

Work out which of these you have before pricing a new door.

Water on the floor

On a framed door, it's usually a split sweep or a blocked drain slot in the track. On frameless glass, a worn seal or a door that has shifted. Neither needs a new door.

A door that sags, drags or won't close

Daily use loosens hinges and a heavy door drops out of line. A tightened or new hinge often fixes it, unless water has softened the wall behind it.

Glass that stays cloudy

A haze that won't wash off is usually minerals that have etched the surface. Past a point, new glass is the honest answer. A cracked or chipped panel is always replaced, never repaired.

Door styles

Framed, semi-frameless or frameless: what fits the space

A framed door has metal around every edge. The frame carries the weight, so the glass can be thinner and walls that aren't quite plumb matter less. It's the usual choice on a tub or a one-piece base, and the least fussy in a busy family bathroom.

Semi-frameless leaves the door edge bare. Frameless uses thicker glass held only by hinges and clips; it looks open but needs solid walls and careful measuring.

Tubs

Tub panels and bathtub doors

A tub doesn't need a curtain. Three common ways to put glass on one:

Sliding bypass doors

Two panels slide past each other on a track, so nothing swings into a narrow room. Good for a kids' bathroom.

A hinged tub screen

A panel that folds back against the wall, for when a fixed one would block the taps.

Basement suites

Basement-suite bathrooms: low ceilings and tight layouts

Brampton allows up to three units on a lot, and second and third units must be registered with the City. Many of those suites have a compact bathroom: a corner base, ductwork under a low ceiling, a door that has to clear the toilet.

A standard door may not fit under a bulkhead, so the glass is made shorter or set to swing clear of it. In a narrow room, a pivot or sliding door often beats a hinged one.

If the suite is rented, say so, and the pro will plan visits around the tenant. A vanity mirror for the suite can go on the same request. For the suite's windows, see our basement unit guide.

What affects the quote

What affects the price: size, glass, hardware and framing

Each door is made for one opening, so the pro prices what they see. Shelves for the same room? See glass cut to size.

  • Size of the opening, and whether the walls are plumb
  • Glass thickness; clear, frosted or patterned
  • Framed, semi-frameless or frameless
  • Door type and hardware finish
  • Removing the old door, and any wall repair behind it

Ask for a written, itemized quote: glass type and thickness, hardware and finish, removal, sealing, and who stands behind the warranty.

The rule

Safety glass in shower and tub enclosures

Ontario's Building Code says glass other than safety glass can't be used for a shower or bathtub enclosure (OBC 9.6.1.4). In practice that means tempered glass, which crumbles into small pieces if it breaks instead of long shards.

Tempered glass can't be cut or drilled once it's made, so each panel is ordered to exact size with its holes in place. A second-hand door or ordinary glass cut to fit isn't a safe shortcut. Unsure about an old door? Look for the small etched stamp in a corner.

Keeping it clean

Hard-water spotting and cleaning

White spots are minerals left when water dries. Squeegee the glass after the day's last shower, leave the door open to dry, and skip scouring pads. On a framed door, clear the track's drain slots now and then. Other household glass is under all services.
