Custom shower enclosures for walk-ins, corners and ensuites

A custom enclosure is glass made for a tiled shower: a walk-in panel, a corner with an angled door, a steam room that has to seal. We're a free referral service, not a glass shop. We pass your photos or drawings to an independent local glass professional who does custom shower work, and they measure, quote and install. Replacing a door on a tub or base? • Walk-ins, neo-angle corners and steam enclosures
  • Measured once the tile is finished
  • Large ensuites and compact suite baths

Layouts

Walk-in, neo-angle, inline and steam-ready layouts

The layout follows where the shower sits in the room.

Walk-in

Fixed glass and no door. It needs enough length to keep the spray inside.

Neo-angle

A corner shower with an angled front and a door on the diagonal. It saves floor space.

Inline

A panel and a door in one line across an alcove.

Steam-ready

Glass from curb to ceiling, often with a transom, sealed all round. The glass pro and the steam-unit installer should agree on details before ordering.

Illustration: every edge marked in red has to seal.

The glass

Glass choices: clear, low-iron, frosted, protective coatings

Whatever the look, the glass is tempered: Ontario's Building Code allows only safety glass in a shower or bathtub enclosure (OBC 9.6.1.4).

Clear or low-iron

Clear glass has a green edge; low-iron glass doesn't. It shows most on large, thick panels, like those in the bigger ensuites of Castlemore's estate homes, and hardly at all on a small corner unit.

Frosted or patterned

Privacy in a shared bathroom, and it hides water spots.

Protective coating

Helps water sheet off. Ask what care it needs.

Timing

Measuring after the tile is done

Tempered glass can't be trimmed, so it's sized to the finished surfaces, not the drawings.

  1. Finish the tile and curb

Fixtures in, tile and curb done. Renovating with a contractor? See how we work with contractors.

  2. The pro measures or templates

They check plumb and level and mark the hinges.

  3. Glass is made to order

Each panel is cut, drilled, then tempered.

  4. Install and cure

Glass is set and sealed; the installer says when to shower.

Hardware

Hardware finishes and hinge vs sliding systems

Hinged doors

Need solid blocking behind the tile and room to swing.

Sliding systems

The door rolls along a bar. Good for long inline showers.

Finishes

Chrome, nickel, black or brass tones. If several people shower every morning, ask about sturdier hinges.

Before and after

A frameless front and door close a tiled steam shower to the ceiling.

Small spaces

Tight spaces: suite bathrooms and sloped ceilings

Suite showers often sit under a bulkhead; some upstairs ones sit under a sloped roofline. Custom glass can follow a slope or stop short of a bulkhead, and a sliding door works where a hinged one can't swing. Big panels also have to get down the stairs, so the pro checks the route.

What affects the quote

What goes into a custom enclosure quote

There's no fair price before someone measures. These move it most:

  • Layout: walk-in panel, inline, neo-angle or full steam
  • Glass area, thickness and type
  • Hinged or sliding hardware, and its finish
  • Sloped ceilings, benches or bulkheads to cut around
  • Access: stairs, landings and carrying distance

A written quote should list each panel's size and glass type, the hardware, sealing, removal, and who stands behind the work.

Whole house

The ensuite and the basement-suite bathroom in one request

If the house needs glass in more than one shower, say the ensuite and a new suite bathroom downstairs, put them in one request, with a vanity mirror if you like, and get one quote.

A grown child can book for parents, or an owner for the tenant's bathroom; give your number and say who will be home. The form has a preferred-language field; we pass it on but can't promise every pro speaks it. Asking is free. This isn't a government program, and nobody from us comes knocking.

Upkeep

Care and resealing

Dry the glass after use. When the silicone yellows, peels or holds mould, cut it out and reseal. A door that drifts usually needs a hinge adjustment, not new glass. The rest of what we match is on the services page.

Share the tile-finished sizes and a photo of the shower

Send each opening's width and height once the tile is done, a photo of the shower and any drawing. We'll pass it to a local pro who does custom shower glass.
