Glass and window help in Georgetown, Halton Hills

Georgetown is in the Town of Halton Hills, west of Brampton, so it runs on the Town's permits and rules, not the City's. Its housing divides clearly by era, and so do its window problems: Moore Park, begun in 1962, is where replacement windows come up; Georgetown South, begun in 1989, is where sealed units and hardware do.

We're a free referral service set up for Brampton and area. A few of the independent pros we refer to take jobs in Halton Hills. Share your Georgetown postal code and we'll first confirm whether one serves it. That pro, not us, measures, quotes and does the job.

From Credit River mills to Halton Hills

Georgetown takes its name from George Kennedy, who settled here in 1821 and built mills on the Credit River. It grew into a town of its own, then became part of the Town of Halton Hills in 1974. That's why a Georgetown window question goes to Halton Hills, not Brampton, and why the rules on this site's Brampton pages don't carry over.

Like Churchville, it began as a mill settlement on the Credit. Any heritage rules in Georgetown are the Town's to explain, so if your house is in the older part of town, ask before changing windows or doors.

Moore Park: 1960s homes and replacement windows

Moore Park began in 1962. A house that age has probably had its windows replaced at least once, and some of those replacements are getting old themselves. When several windows fog, frames are cracked or soft, or the whole house is drafty, full replacement windows are worth pricing.

Expect a mix: one window may need only a sealed unit while its neighbour needs replacing, so ask for each opening quoted separately.

Georgetown South: sealed units and hardware

Georgetown South began in 1989. Houses from then on may still have original windows, and the problems tend to be parts:

  • Fog between the panes: moisture has got past the seal around the glass. A new sealed unit goes into the frame you already have.
  • Cranks, locks and hinges: worn casement operators and latches replaced on their own.
  • Patio door rollers: a door that drags usually needs new rollers or a cleaned track, not a new door.
  • Weatherstripping: worn seals replaced before they turn into drafts.

Permits through the Town of Halton Hills

The Town of Halton Hills issues building permits in Georgetown. We haven't set out its rules here, so check with the Town's building department before you:

  • enlarge a window or add a new opening;
  • cut a new basement window, or add a second unit;
  • replace windows or doors on a house that may have heritage status.

Ask about a same-size replacement too. Brampton's permit packages, fees and unit registry don't apply in Georgetown.

Patio doors, screens and storm doors

Doors follow the same split by era. In Moore Park, a patio door may be an early replacement, and a new door can make more sense than another round of repairs. In Georgetown South, a slider that grinds or refuses to latch is more often a roller, keeper or adjustment problem. Torn screens can be rescreened in their frames, and a storm door with a tired closer or cracked glass can usually be repaired. Our patio doors page sets out the options.

Georgetown questions

Can you find a pro who works in Georgetown?

We accept requests from Georgetown and the rest of Halton Hills, but coverage there isn't automatic. First we confirm that one of the independent pros we refer to takes that type of work in your part of town; only then does your request go out. If we can't find one, we'll say so.

Who handles window permits in Georgetown?

The Town of Halton Hills; the City of Brampton's rules, fees and forms don't apply. Before changing the size of an opening or adding a basement unit, call the Town's building department, and ask about a like-for-like replacement too.

Are 1960s Moore Park windows worth repairing?

It depends which windows you have. If they're a later replacement and the frames are solid, a fresh sealed unit, crank or lock may be all they need. Soft or cracked frames, drafts all round, or fog in several windows at once point toward replacement. Originals vary, so let the pro judge from photos, and see our guide on whether to fix the glass or replace the window.

Our Georgetown South house still has its original windows. Is it time to replace them?

Not automatically. Windows from the late 1980s and 1990s often need parts rather than replacement: a fogged sealed unit, a stripped crank, worn weatherstripping. Replacement becomes the better choice when several units fail at once, frames have warped, or you'd rather do the house in one go, possibly with ENERGY STAR windows and Ontario's Home Renovation Savings rebate. Ask the pro to price both routes.
