Window and glass help in Bolton

First, the honest part: Bolton is in the Town of Caledon, not Brampton. It has its own permit office and its own rules, and this site is set up for Brampton.

We're a free referral service, and some of the independent pros on our list travel into Caledon. Give us your Bolton postal code and the job, and we'll see if one of them serves your street. When one does, the request goes to them, and they measure, quote and do the work. When none does, you'll hear that from us instead of silence.

A mill town on the Humber

Bolton began around 1822 as Bolton Mills, when a flour mill went up on the Humber River. The town has older streets and much newer ones, so the right advice depends on your house's age, not the town's. A photo of the whole window, sent with your request, tells the pro more than the address does.

Fogged glass and broken panes

Most glass jobs can be done without touching the frame:

  • Fogged glass: a cloudy film inside the double glazing means its seal is gone. A replacement unit is built to the existing frame's size.
  • Broken panes: cracked or shattered glass is replaced on its own, once the opening is safe and covered.
  • Window screens: torn mesh rescreened, bent frames rebuilt.
  • Hardware: cranks, locks and rollers replaced one part at a time.

Replacement windows and doors

Once frames are rotting, split or leaking along every edge, replacement windows beat patching them year after year, and the same holds for a patio or entry door with a failed frame. Ask for each opening on its own line so the work can be phased.

The Home Renovation Savings Program is run by the province, so it isn't limited to Brampton addresses. Certified ENERGY STAR units earn money back per opening, but only through an energy assessment and alongside at least one other upgrade. Read its terms before ordering.

Permits are Caledon's, not Brampton's

Everything the City of Brampton says about permits, second units, the unit registry and rental licensing stops at the city line. In Bolton, the Town of Caledon sets the rules for building permits, second units and rental housing. We haven't set out Caledon's rules on this site, and we won't guess at them.

Before you enlarge a window, cut a new basement opening or add a unit, call the Town of Caledon's building department and ask what applies. Ask about a same-size replacement too; the answer is theirs to give.

Getting a pro out from Brampton

Here is how a Bolton request works:

  1. You send your postal code, a photo and a short description of the job.
  2. We look for an independent pro on our list who handles that job in your part of Caledon.
  3. If we find one, we pass your request on and let you know. If we don't, we say so plainly.

If your address is inside Brampton, our service areas page lists the neighbourhoods we cover. Enter your Bolton postal code and describe the job.

Bolton questions

Can you find a pro for a Bolton or Caledon address?

We take requests from Bolton and the rest of Caledon, and check each one before passing it on. It comes down to whether one of the independent pros we work with travels to your street for that type of job. A match means your request goes out; no match means we let you know straight away.

Who issues window permits in Bolton?

The Town of Caledon, not the City of Brampton, whose permit packages, fees and forms don't apply here. Call the Town's building department before cutting or enlarging an opening, adding a basement unit or making any structural change, and ask about a same-size replacement too.

Can the fogged glass in my Bolton windows be replaced without new frames?

Usually, yes. The double-glazed insert can be ordered to size and fitted into the frame you have, provided that frame is square and solid. A cracked frame, or air leaking around the whole window, tips the choice toward a new window.

For a Bolton house, does a glass-only repair usually cost less than a new window?

In most cases, yes: a new sealed unit or pane is a smaller job, with fewer materials and less finishing. The price depends on the glass size and type, whether it's tempered, access, and how easily it comes out of the frame. If the frame has failed, the glass-only route stops being good value.

Does Brampton's rental licence apply to a basement unit in Bolton?

No. Brampton's rental licensing and second-unit registration apply inside Brampton only. For a basement unit in Bolton, ask the Town of Caledon what's required before changing any windows. Our basement windows page covers the window side of the work.
