Screen doors

Screen doors that slide, swing and roll again

The patio screen takes the knocks: people in and out all day, a dog at the corner, a gust on the deck. When it jumps the track, tears or won't latch, that's a small repair, separate from the glass door and one of several door and screen jobs we help with. We match you with an independent local pro who repairs and builds screen doors.

  • Rollers, mesh and latches
  • Retractable and pet-door options
  • Separate from the glass door

Off its track and hanging crooked: usually new rollers and a straightened frame.

Sliding screens

Sliding patio screens: rollers, frames and mesh

The screen shares a frame with the glass door but has its own rollers and track. If the glass panel drags, see sliding door repair.

Patio screen keeps jumping the track

Worn or low-set spring rollers, or a bowed frame. New rollers and a tension adjustment put it back.

Won't close or latch

The screen has sagged below its latch. Raising the rollers realigns it; a cracked latch is a small part.

Ripped or baggy mesh

The frame is fine, so it's a rescreen, in pet-resistant mesh if a dog is the reason.

Other screen types

Retractable and magnetic screen options

A front door, a hinged patio door or a French pair needs something other than a sliding screen.

Magnetic curtain

Mesh panels that close behind you on magnets. Hands-free, but a seasonal accessory rather than a fitted door.

Swinging screen door

A framed screen on hinges with a closer. Sturdy, but it needs room to swing.

Fix or rebuild

Repair the screen door or replace it?

Torn mesh on a straight frame is a rescreen, and rollers, latches and handles are small parts. Replace when the frame is bent out of line, the corners have split, or the screen was made for a different opening.

Two screen doors: one with a triangular tear in the mesh on a straight frame, one with its frame bowed along the hinge side
Left: torn mesh, a rescreen. Right: a bent frame, which usually means a new one.

What sets the price

What goes into a screen door quote

  • Sliding, hinged or retractable screen
  • Rescreen, new rollers or a new frame
  • Standard fibreglass or pet-resistant mesh
  • Standard or custom opening size
  • Extras such as a pet door or new latch

Measure the height and width of the opening the screen fills, and say which kind you have.

Pets

Pet doors in screen doors

A flap can be set into the lower part of a screen door, usually with pet-resistant mesh at the same time, which spares the corner a dog would otherwise push through. On a slider, the pro checks the flap won't catch the glass door's handle.

Combination doors

Storm-and-screen combination doors

On a front or side entrance, the screen is often a storm door's summer insert. Torn mesh there is rescreened the same way; closers and glass are on the storm doors page.

Second units

Screen doors on a side entrance to a basement unit

A basement unit's side entrance is often the tenant's only door to fresh air, and a screen door that latches lets the unit air out on summer evenings. Book it with the unit's window screens. The pro we match you with should come when agreed, keep the space tidy, and show whoever is home how it latches.
